The bald eagle, America’s national bird, is renowned for its impressive size and striking appearance. A bird of such magnitude requires a nest to match.
Known as aeries, bald eagle nests are truly colossal. Constructed from sticks, branches, and materials sourced from the birds’ natural habitat, these nests can weigh up to 2000 pounds (900 kg). While the average bald eagle nest spans about 4 to 6 feet (120 to 180 cm) in width and 2 to 4 feet (60 to 120 cm) in depth, some nests can be significantly larger.
The most extensive recorded bald eagle nest was discovered in St. Petersburg, Florida, measuring an astounding 9.5 feet (290 cm) wide and 20 feet (610 cm) deep.
Beyond their size, bald eagle nests are also renowned for their positioning. They are typically constructed in tall trees or on cliffs, providing a panoramic view of the surroundings. This strategic placement enables the eagles to spot potential sources of sustenance and safeguard their offspring from predators.
