Osiris is a Dutch Shepherd, while Riff Rat is, as the name suggests, a rat. Riff Rat was saved from the brink of death when he was just a 4 week old baby.
Osiris, who was himself rescued after being abandoned in a parking lot, helped Riff Rat regain his health.
